FamilySearch's consolidated Family Tree for this couple (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GH8Y-D85) lists 14 children in total, of whom only John William Rutter was previously documented in this archive. The other 13 - added here with year-level birth/death dates only, taken from that tree's summary view rather than each child's own underlying record - are: Charles Allen Daniel (b. c.1882), Daniel Edward Francis (b. c.1883), Maria Christina (b. c.1885), Petronella Johanna (1887-1899), Wilhelmena Elizabeth (1889-1941), Gertrude Fredricka (b. c.1890), Charles Benjamin (1892-1971), John Thomas (1894-1895), James George (b. c.1896), Henry William (b. c.1898), Mary Ann Maria (1900-1987), Thomas Robert (1905-1925), and Walter Henry George (1908-1967). None of these 13 are independently verified against original records - treat as a starting point for further research, not settled fact. Identified by Claude, 7 Sep 2026.

Life events

Sex: Male

Birth — 1 OCT 1855, Cape Town, Cape Colony, South Africa
Corrects the earlier estimate of "ABT 1857, England" added on 7 Sep 2026. His own baptism record (South Africa, Church of the Province of South Africa Parish Registers, christened 16 Nov 1855, Cape Town) gives an exact birth date and shows he was Cape-born - son of James Rutter and Mary Ann Sophia (Spengler) Rutter - not an English immigrant himself, despite his later British Army service. Source: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:D66Z-6N6Z . Identified by Claude, 7 Sep 2026 - not yet independently verified against the original register.
Death — 23 APR 1932, 17 Alfred Street, Salt River, Cape District, South Africa
Death certificate (already in this archive) gives cause of death as "senile decay", duration 5 weeks; usual residence Maitland; a retired British Army soldier on an old-age pension, consistent with a garrison family that settled at the Cape. Identified by Claude, 7 Sep 2026 - please verify.
Occupation
Retired soldier (British Army)
Per his 1932 death certificate (already in this archive). A separate, more weakly sourced FamilySearch Family Tree entry gives his occupation as "Painter" instead - possibly an earlier or civilian occupation, not verified. Identified by Claude, 7 Sep 2026.
